Litsch gets fifth win as Toronto beats Minnesota

Baseball Betting Lines

05/14/2008 - Minneapolis, MN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jesse Litsch notched his fifth win and the Toronto Blue Jays got their offense going with 10 hits to defeat the Minnesota Twins, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game series at the Metrodome.

Litsch (5-1) went 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts, helping Toronto post back-to-back wins after a horrid offensive stretch and four straight losses.

Lyle Overbay went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run. Matt Stairs homered, walked twice and scored two runs for the Blue Jays.

Toronto scratched out three runs in the tenth inning Monday in the second half of a doubleheader at Cleveland to halt a five-game losing streak and snap a streak of scoreless innings at 31 1/3.

"We did a lot of good things tonight," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "We pitched very good. Rolen had that great at-bat and wore him (Slowey) out and then Stairs came up with the big homer."

Twins starter Kevin Slowey (0-3) lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out five in his third start of the season and second since coming off the disabled list due to a right biceps strain.

Carlos Gomez was 2-for-4 with a home run for the Twins, who were coming off of taking three of four from the Red Sox at home. Jason Kubel clubbed a pinch-hit homer.

The teams traded runs in the eighth inning of a tight game. A Gregg Zaun sacrifice fly in the top half off the Twins' Brian Bass added insurance, but Kubel took Toronto's Armando Benitez deep in his first appearance of the season to lead off the bottom half, keeping Minnesota within two.

B.J. Ryan came on in the ninth, giving up a leadoff single to Michael Cuddyer but retired the next three batters, earning his sixth save.

Minnesota got on the board first with a two-out Gomez home run to left in the third.

Toronto came on in the fourth to take the lead on consecutive two-out RBI doubles from Overbay and Shannon Stewart.

Stairs added another run for the Jays in the sixth with a two-out homer to right and chased Slowey from the game in favor of Matt Guerrier.

The Twins pulled to within 3-2 in the bottom half. Litsch allowed a leadoff single to Gomez, retired the next two batters before giving way to Jesse Carlson, who allowed a Justin Morneau triple to right-center. Jason Frasor came on to retire Michael Cuddyer to end the inning.

Toronto got the run right back in the seventh on an Aaron Hill RBI single off Guerrier.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
