The Padres literally slipped past the Cubs on a chilly, rainy night in the Windy City. The Padres scored all of their runs in the fourth, winning for the third time in four games and snapping a five-game losing streak on the road.

Adrian Gonzalez and Scott Hairston singled in front of Greene's home run over the short porch in left. Winning pitcher Shawn Estes kept the frame alive with a two-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored the eventual winning run on Jody Gerut's double.

Estes (1-0) gave up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk over 5 1/3 frames in his first start since April 5, 2006 against San Francisco. He missed the entire 2007 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but worked his way back to pick up his 100th career victory Tuesday night.

Trevor Hoffman worked a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to record his seventh save of the season.

Marquis (1-3) took the loss, allowing nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Alfonso Soriano led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run, and Reed Johnson doubled home two runs in the second, giving the Cubs an early 3-0 edge before Estes settled down.

Chicago saw its four-game win streak come to an end in the second contest of a four-game set.
